Why is it Called The Foundry?

The Foundry owes its name to the 18th-century English priest John Wesley, who was also the originator of the Methodist movement. Early on, Wesley headquartered his ministry at an old, abandoned factory in London where cannons were once molded and cast. Wesley took custody of this building and renovated it to make it usable as a space for small groups, a school, a medical dispensary, a bookstore, and for worship services. This place was known to locals as The Foundery, and out of it the Methodist movement exploded in popularity and significance across the country of England.

Though we’ve modernized the word’s spelling, we’ve sought to carry forward its ethos. Our hope is that The Foundry will be a place that the people of San Antonio will encounter and experience God’s grace in tangible and transforming ways. Like John Wesley’s vision, we also pray that people can gather in intentional relationship, growing together as disciples and as leaders for their respective congregations.

A foundry, at its core, is a place where things are formed, given shape, and sent out with purpose. We hope The Foundry will do just that by the power of the Holy Spirit. Through worship, community, and service, God will shape us more and more in the image of Jesus Christ.
