The Foundry: Season 2 Premiere

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Luke 10:25-37

Do you have a favorite neighbor? Do you have a least favorite neighbor? Do you even know your neighbors? Who would you even call your neighbor?

Is it odd that when I hear the word “neighbor” the person that first comes to mind is Mr. Rogers, a person I’ve never even met, much less lived near? Maybe not. Jesus used one of his many parables to talk about neighbors as he shared about the Good Samaritan. He shared the story of the man who was attacked by robbers, left half dead, was passed by twice before a man stopped to care for him, to help us see who was the neighbor and it had nothing to do with who lived where. It was the man who had mercy on him that Jesus calls neighbor and tells us to “do likewise”.

So while we often think of our neighbor as the person who is close and familiar - shops at the same grocery store, sits in the same pew, works down the same hall - maybe there is something for us to learn in Jesus’ expanded view of neighbors. As Jesus calls us to love our neighbors as ourself and be like the one who had mercy on the man, maybe there is a whole new way to Encounter Christ in the Unfamiliar and Unexpected.

That’s why in this season of Community Nights we want to take some time to look at some of the unfamiliar and unexpected neighbors in our lives…
